DEG advises government and other service providers
The Dharriwaa Elders Group seeks to meet and provide advice to all agencies hoping to deliver services to the Walgett Aboriginal community. It also takes opportunities to shape government policy when it can. For example the DEG conducted a workshop to prepare a submission to the NSW Alcohol Summit in 2003. George Rose represented the Group at the “Talking About Grog” Forums in 2003 and again in 2004 in Sydney organised by the Dept of Aboriginal Affairs where recommendations were made for the Alcohol Summit from the Aboriginal communities of NSW. Recently advice and support has been extended to Youth Off the Streets which launched its new Walgett Youth Program 1 September 2007.
The DEG takes a leadership role in the Walgett community and regularly responds to government actions when they impact on the community. The DEG convenes meetings with government as needed in order to voice its opinions in matters of culture, education, planning, development, health, housing, law and justice. The DEG’s policy submissions can be downloaded.
The DEG is actively involved in shaping programs and services to address the Walgett community's needs. It is a valued participant in the Walgett CDAT, the Walgett Interagency and Walgett Community Working Party and convenes an Interagency Subcommittee in order to implement a whole-of-community Youth Plan.
The DEG regularly welcomes service providers and other non-Aboriginal professionals to Walgett, and meets with them to assist the delivery of much-needed services.
