Dharriwaa Elders Group raising funds to purchase new premises!
In January 2008 the new owners of 37 Wee Waa St Walgett, required DEG to vacate its premises. It was a very disappointing experience for DEG's elders, including the Walgett AMS's founder George Rose, to be evicted by a sister Aboriginal organisation.
Encouragingly, the Walgett Community Working Party at its meeting 29 August 2007 acknowledged the need for suitable Walgett premises for the Dharriwaa Elders Group. The DEG needs permanent Walgett premises, in order to sustain its development which has progressed steadily since 1998, with the assistance of state and federal governments. The Dharriwaa Elders Group believes that it’s consistent best practice governance and accountability practices, including its proven project planning and management record and growing experience in successful Aboriginal employment and training, demonstrate it is worthy of continued support.
After four months work including undertaking valuations and a financial feasibility studywith the financial assistance of the NSW Dept of State and Regional Development, the DEG reached the conclusion that there were no suitable Walgett rental properties available. After receiving no emergency funds and being knocked back for loans the Dharriwaa Elders Group was offered a solution for the short-term.
A local friend bought an empty mainstreet premises earmarked by the Group, and is renting it to the DEG until we are able to purchase the building. The Dharriwaa Elders Group gratefully thanks legal advisors Gilbert + Tobin and Chris Greiner of Ryans Lawyers for their understanding and assistance.
The Dharriwaa Elders Group moved into its new premises at 47 Fox St Walgett, on the 29th January 2008.
Now the serious task begins to raise funds for a new non-profit Charitable Foundation to purchase the premises for the use of the Dharriwaa Elders Group. Donations will be much appreciated, and may be made direct by credit card

Above: The DEG's rented shopfront at 37 Wee Waa St after the building's new owners obscured our shop display by mesh. We have now moved to 47 Fox St Walgett and will upload photos of our new premises soon.

We believe the elderly Aboriginal people who have worked hard since childhood, often to establish the wealth of surrounding pastoralists, and then as community volunteers, deserve a facility where they can meet and conduct activities. We also believe that the many government and non-government agencies who work in Walgett with the DEG will benefit if our organisation has a secure future.
