Latest news: The Dharriwaa Elders Group launched Walgett's first Aboriginal cultural exhibition space 9 August 2008 as one of its contributions towards Walgett's community festival held that week. The exhibition launched was the travelling "In Living Memory" display of Aboriginal Welfare Board photographs held by State Records NSW. This important exhibition contains photos of DEG's family members - many not seen before in Walgett. The DEG plans to share its knowledge more in the future by staging cultural exhibitions - funds permitting. Check out information about the projects and activities of the Dharriwaa Elders Group

The Dharriwaa Elders Group recently commissioned a review of the scientific work undertaken by the NSW Government which its uses to justify that opal mining should proceed in the area known as OPA 4 around the Narran Lakes wetland. We are currently using this report to lobby various government departments to take a second look at the basis for the OPAs being opened up to opal mining. This process has contributed to staff knowledge of legal and scientific matters relating to DEG's Aboriginal cultural heritage management work. It has also assisted DEG members to communicate with scientists and develop a shared knowledge of local issues of concern to them.

Also: The Dharriwaa Elders Group made a supplementary submission 29 August 2008 in response to a request from the NSW Parliament's Social Issues Standing Committee Inquiry into Indigenous Disadvantage . Other recent DEG reports can be found here
