Latest news: The Dharriwaa Elders Group launched Walgett's first Aboriginal cultural exhibition space 9 August 2008 as one of its contributions towards Walgett's community festival held that week. The exhibition launched was the travelling "In Living Memory" display of Aboriginal Welfare Board photographs held by State Records NSW. This important exhibition contains photos of DEG's family members - many not seen before in Walgett. The DEG plans to share its knowledge more in the future by staging cultural exhibitions - funds permitting. The Dharriwaa Elders Group recently commissioned a review of the scientific work undertaken by the NSW Government which its uses to justify that opal mining should proceed in the area known as OPA 4 around the Narran Lakes wetland. We are currently using this report to lobby various government departments to take a second look at the basis for the OPAs being opened up to opal mining. This process has contributed to staff knowledge of legal and scientific matters relating to DEG's Aboriginal cultural heritage management work. It has also assisted DEG members to communicate with scientists and develop a shared knowledge of local issues of concern to them. About the Dharriwaa Elders Group. The Dharriwaa Elders Group (DEG) was born 20 November 2000 after working together on projects since 1998. The Group took its name from one of its sacred sites - Narran Lakes - Dharriwaa (common meeting place) and its full members are Aboriginal people over 60 who live in Walgett. The DEG was auspiced by the Walgett Aboriginal Medical Service until 1 July 2005, when it became autonomous. Projects of the Group aim to:
