Richard Lake is a Waka Waka man who was born in Kingaroy Qld 1944. He has three children - Vincent, Richard and Gloria and nine grandchildren at last count. Richard's first partner was Alma Tighe (deceased) and his last partner was Margaret Morgan who Richard nursed through a terminal illness three years ago. "My father Tom Lake worked in the forestry in Blackbutt. My family moved from there to Brisbane and then to Mercadool Station in 1958 where my father was working as a station hand. I joined the army when I was seventeen and left when I was twenty when I moved to Walgett to join my family in 1964 and worked around on stations during shearing times. I worked in an asbestos mine in Barrabra from 1972 and then in a coal mine from 1981 in the Hunter Valley. After four years I transferred to an open cut mine in Gunnedah where elected as union delegate and became the state union delegate. I did about four years there and then moved to Sydney where I was Hostel Manager for Aboriginal Hostels for six years. I also worked near Walgett on a property called "Salt Glen" for about six years. I have been working for the Dharriwaa Elders Group since 2003". Richard plays guitar and has formed the Dharriwaa Country Music Band" with some Walgett friends.

Gladys Russell was born in Yass in 1948. Gladys has four children Karen, Ronald, William and Robert. William died in a bus accident in Dubbo. Gladys has seven grandchildren. "I came to Walgett when I was thirteen and have lived here ever since. I worked as a cleaner in the school and TAFE. My favourite activity is watching football".
