Work began on the Dharriwaa Elders Group site register in January 2001, after the project received funding to make recordings. Before then, the Group's knowledge about significant places had already begun to be recorded on video, during the Dharriwaa Walaay youth and elders camps in October 1999 and June 2000. It wasn't until 2005 that the Dharriwaa Elders Group received funding from NSW Heritage Office to edit the recordings collected and to complete Stage One of the site register. The post-production process has been undertaken by Wendy Spencer of Heuristic Video Pty Ltd, alongside her project management and other duties.
The site register is designed to be used by the Dharriwaa Elders Group and its approved guests, to manage Aboriginal cultural heritage in the region. The user interface is the GIS "Map Info Professional v.7". DEG's mapped sites link to html pages about each site, which in turn contain links to video clips of elders speaking about the places and their significance, and useful documents and other materials. Over 155 sites are mapped so far, but there is still lots to map in Stage Two.
In September 2006 a safety copy of the site register was lodged with University of New England Heritage Centre after an agreement was negotiated about the lodgement terms.
