Interpretive sign remembering the Freedom Ride visit to Walgett in Trevallion Park

This is where you can read about the Freedom Riders and their brave visit to Walgett in February 1965. The Dharriwaa Elders Group erected a sign in Walgett's Trevallion Park to tell the story of when the Student Action for Aborigines (SAFA) group, under the leadership of Charles Perkins, visited Walgett to spotlight Australian racism. The Walgett Aboriginal community will always be grateful to the young students and their supporters for bringing its situation to the attention of mainstream Australia and the world. The Dharriwaa Elders Group has nominated the Freedom Ride visit to Walgett for National Heritage listing and is in the process of nominating it for NSW Heritage recognition. In 2000 Walgett school children and Aboriginal community members marched with Charles Perkins' family from Apex Park to a memorial ceremony in the RSL Hall, to commemorate the passing of Charles Perkins and honour his service to the community. The community recently commemorated the 50th anniversary of the Freedom Ride visit in February 2015.
